- It's a holiday in 46 states that recognizes the official end of slavery.
- In President Abraham Lincoln's Emancipation Proclamation, he proclaimed (announced) that all slaves were free. It took affect on January 1, 1863.
- However, slavery continued in Texas. Since the state of Texas wasn't a battleground during the Civil War, their slaves weren't freed by the proclamation, unless they escaped to a freed state.
- In April 1865, the Civil War ended.
- On June 19, 1865, a Union Army General announced to a city in southern Texas that all slaves were freed. The people celebrated.
- June 19th became known as "Juneteenth," and the celebrations continue in many places around the country to this day.
