Our Kindness Week wrapped up with a sweet treat on Friday. With that, the children were reminded of an important message: DONUT (Do Not) BE A BULLY! A special thanks goes out to our school's counselor, Miss Jolene, and her Kindness Team for organizing the events this week.
Veterans from the Great Lakes Bay Veterans Coalition, along with our School Resource Officer, visited our class today. Mr. Brad Blanchard taught us about the history of the United States flag and flag etiquette. Mr. Dave DeLongchamp, Mr. Gregg Smith, Mr. Matt Smith, and SRO Deputy Jason Brandt, taught us ceremonial flag folding and answered some of our questions about the military. At the closing of the presentation, several students practiced looking the men in the eyes, shaking their hands, and saying, "Thank you for your service."
Our class is thankful for those men and women who have volunteered to serve our country in the armed forces. We thank you for your service to the United States of America. Thursday was Share a Smile Day. The students were encouraged to offer each other some forms of non-verbal communication, such as a smile, a high five, or a thumbs up. Smiles abounded when representatives from Tyson showed up to offer the kids a tasty piece of chicken. It's not every day that they see a chicken mascot walking around the cafeteria!
We are learning about some internal and external structures that help animals to survive. To experience the benefits of blubber, we put that freshly-fallen snow to good use by comparing how a bare hand felt inside the snow versus how it felt when placed inside a "blubber glove" (Ziploc bag with Crisco). All students agreed, the blubber glove was a HUGE advantage to keeping warm!
Students were encouraged to "Be a Hero and Courageous" by wearing mismatched clothing today. They were reminded that it takes a hero with a courageous mindset to show kindness in challenging situations.
Due to the snow, the children were unable to write the encouraging messages and drawings on the track and sidewalk as planned. Instead, students were encouraged to speak those kind messages aloud to others or write them on the Kindness notes that we're writing this week.
Let's take a minute to hear some inspiring words from Kid President...
World Kindness Day was established on November 13, 1998. Pine River students will be participating in various kindness activities throughout this upcoming week. One activity is to "fill someone's bucket" (based on the book posted below) by writing a kind comment to another person and giving it to the person. The person will read it and then place the paper into a classroom bucket. Papers will be removed from the bucket and put on display in the hallway.
Today was Get Comfy with Kindness Day. Students were encouraged to wear their most comfy clothes. During reading time, the children found comfy places in the room to read or listen to a story read aloud. Tomorrow will be Chalk It Up! Day. The children will be encouraged to draw and/or write encouraging words on our track and sidewalk. A special thank you goes to Miss Jolene and the fifth grade Leadership Team for organizing the fun activities. |
