The children and I are looking forward to a great week of learning in nature! The clouds and rain didn't dampen the fourth graders' spirits on Wednesday. Everyone was dry and comfortable as they rode to Lansing in style. The cushioned seats, movies, backpacks full of snacks, and sights out the large windows made for a delightful trip down and back. While in Lansing, the students were able to tour both the Michigan State Capitol and the Michigan History Museum.
A HUGE thank you goes out to all of our wonderful chaperones for taking such good care of us. We'd also like to send a special thank you to Senator Jim Stamas for taking the time out of his busy schedule to speak with us. Thank you to our bus driver, Miss Penny, and to our tour guide at the capitol, Miss Stephanie, too. There was a LOT to see in both places, and some students expressed an interest in returning with their families. Here are some links and pricing information: Michigan State Capitol Cost: FREE *FREE* guided & self-guided tours are available. Open Monday - Saturday. Michigan History Museum Adults (18+) - $6 Seniors (65+) - $4 Youth (6-17) - $2 Children (5 and under) - Free Open 7 days a week. Miss Mary & Miss Connie from Consumers Energy presented several energy concepts to the children. Here's a brief description of the program from the Think! Energy website:
Think! Energy program – a 60 minute interactive, hands-on presentation with a take home energy efficiency kit for each participating student and teacher. The program teaches the importance of energy, natural resources and environmental resources, and gives each participating student’s family energy-efficient technologies to install at home. Mr. Mulder, a Physician Assistant at MidMichigan Health, stopped by to give us an introduction to a few of the body systems. The students are looking forward to learning more about the systems in fifth grade. Thank you for taking the time to stop by and for answering our questions.
March's outdoor nature time was about adding fractions of leaflets to make a whole. To begin with, Miss Cherie addressed a common misconception that leaflets are leaves, but they really aren’t. During the activity, the children received a card with a fraction of leaflets on it. The object of the activity was to find a card with another fraction of leaflets that, when added to the first fraction, made one whole.
