The children celebrated Thanksgiving with their friends on Tuesday. The fun began by making "Friendship Salad" from the items that everyone contributed. Then, they enjoyed some friendship time by playing games and sharing laughter. Later, they had the opportunity to read with friends. The day concluded with cockroach play time. It was a pleasurable day for all. Sweaty palms. Elevated heartbeat. Butterflies in the stomach. Is that what comes to your mind when you think of public speaking? Oral presentations are a requirement of third grade, and these third graders didn't let their fears of public speaking stop them. They came right to the front of the class, grabbed a microphone, and read aloud their personal narratives to everyone. Each of the children should be congratulated for a job well done!
We have a new addition to our classroom – Madagascar Hissing Cockroaches! The students’ interests were so greatly piqued during Mrs. Jean’s recent presentation that we got four for our classroom. Thank you to Mrs. Jean for the donation and the delivery. On Friday, the students enjoyed naming the little fellows (They are all males.). Can you tell them apart? ***Mrs. Jean has more cockroaches that are looking for good homes. Please contact me if you're interested.***
Students had an opportunity to pay 50¢ to wear a hat to school today. The funds raised will be donated to Safe and Sound Child Advocacy Center. Thank you for your support of the cause.
Mrs. LaPrad, a nurse with the health department, visited us today. She used a special powder and a black light to illustrate how germs are passed through handshakes and on objects that we touch. Students were asked to wash their hands well and then recheck them under the black light. The students learned the following hand-washing tip: sing the "Happy Birthday" song two times while thoroughly washing hands. She also talked to them about good practices when it comes to coughing and sneezing. Thank you, Mrs. LaPrad, for investing in our health.
Today third grade students welcomed Mr. Crawford, United States veteran and father of fellow third grader, Madison. Mr. Crawford began his presentation by explaining what a veteran is and gave a brief history of the origins of Veterans' Day. Then he shared photos and information about his time in the Army as a medic and a pilot. He also brought along some of the clothing and equipment that he used during is 21 years in the military. At the conclusion of his presentation, he gave each of the children a special coin on which the seven Army values is stated, and he encouraged them to live out those values in their lives. Furthermore, he encouraged them to take the time (with parent permission) to thank American Veterans with a simple handshake and a "Thank You."
On behalf of the staff and students at Pine River Elementary, our class would like to thank Mr. Crawford (and Mrs. Crawford, who also served in the military) as well as ALL veterans, for your service to the United States of America. The children were the happy recipients of a learning gift this morning. Mrs. Eidsmoe, Mr. Woodcock, Mr. Moore, Mr. Juengel and Mr. Mudd from the Studley Grange in Midland County presented each third grader in our school district with a personal dictionary. The Studley Grange, a local chapter of the National Grange, participates in a program called The Dictionary Project whose mission is to put dictionaries into the hands of third graders across the nation. The dictionaries will get lots of use this year and for many years to come. We thank you, Studley Grange, for your generosity.
If you'd like to learn more about the Studley Grange, the group meets the 4th Wednesday monthly, 7:30 p.m., Studley Grange Hall, 1883 E. Gordonville Road. In preparation for our upcoming science test, Mrs. Jean and several of her Madagascar hissing cockroaches stopped by for a visit. Mrs. Jean told us about several of the cockroaches' adaptations for survival, such as hissing, camouflage, armor and mimicry. She also described the habitat in Madagascar where the cockroaches live and how to replicate that habitat inside of a terrarium. A little squirming and lots of giggling erupted when the children were offered the opportunity to hold the little critters.
