We found the volume of rectangular prisms a few days ago. But what do you do when you need to find the volume of a solid, such as a marble or a paperclip?
Follow these steps:
Check out this video to learn about the words displacement and meniscus: Measuring Volume by Displacement (YouTube Video) Students learned that volume is the amount of space that matter takes up and that the volume of rectangular prisms is measured in cubic units.
In the pictures below, you will see how the students found the volumes of their pencil boxes and other items using cubic inch blocks. Students also learned a short-cut method for finding volume: Multiply the length (l) x width (w) x height (h). l x w x h = volume (in cubic units) More information about volume can be found below: Kahn Academy: Volume: Measuring with Unit Cubes (Video) Introducing Volume (You Tube Video) Kids Math: Finding the Volume of a Cube or Box Game: Volume Shapes Shoot Tie-Dye/Colorful Wednesday was full of a lot of colors. Tomorrow will be one color from head to toe.
Students stepped back in time to experience the lumbering process of the late 1800s. Below is a description of the program from CNC's School Programs brochure: In the late 1800s, pine was king in the Saginaw Valley and lumbering was big business! Discover how Michigan’s vast pine forests were forever changed by the lumberman’s axe and saw. In this program students assume the roles of lumbermen as they perform jobs including sawing and rafting logs, using marking hammers, and loading a logging sled. They will also see how lumbering was a cooperative process by working together to get logs to the “mill.” Our field trip wouldn't have been possible without all of the wonderful help that we received today. Thank you to Mrs. Bebeau, Mrs. Blizzard, Mrs. Richards, and Mr. Rubio for braving the heat and taking the time to chaperone us today. Our class would also like to extend a thank you to our head naturalists, Miss Carie and Miss Jennifer for teaching the lessons and to Miss Cherie, Mr. Eric, and Mr. Ben for their assistance.
Be sure to check out CNC's upcoming events. Homecoming Spirit Week started out on a patriotic note this week. Stop back by tomorrow to see our crazy socks!
