The students enjoyed a trip to the high school auditorium this afternoon for Dow High's production of Disney's "Beauty and the Beast." Everyone enjoyed themselves, and many want to return later with their families so that they can see the entire production since we saw mainly the song and dance numbers.

Over the next three days, students will rotate through these stations that align with our week-long theme:
Water "Incredible Water Journey" (Identify the movement of water within the water cycle; review the three states of matter: solid, liquid, & gas; water transitions between these states) "Create a Solar Still" (Review the water cycle; create a solar still to capture water; here's how to create a solar still at home.) "Filter Water from Vernal Pools" (Purification of vernal pool water) "Vernal Pools and Pond Organisms" (Look for living organisms in vernal pools and ponds) Food "Set Traps" (Use corn as bait to set live traps in the woods) "Make a Fishing Pole" (Use a long stick, piece of hawthorn, piece of natural fiber, such as raffia, & a worm to create a pole) "Fish" (Test out your pole from the banks of the river) "Poisionous Plant Recognition" (Recognize buckthorn, poison ivy, and & highbush cranberry) "Animal Tracks Identification" (In a survival situation, it's important to be able to recognize the tracks of animals to hunt) "Food Chain Game" (Create food chains; for example: sun --> grass --> rabbit --> fox --> hunter) Weather, Fire & First-Aid "Observe the Weather" (In a survival situation, it's important to keep an eye to the sky) "Four Types of Clouds" (We used cattail seeds to create images of these four types of clouds: cumulus, stratus, cirrus, & cumulonimbus.) "Fire Building" (Can you start a fire using only natural materials, a metal pan, and one match?) "First-Aid" (What do you include in a first-aid kit? Can you recognize the symptoms of hypothermia, heat stroke, etc?) Our theme of the week is "Survival." On Monday morning, students participated in the lesson, "How to Not Get Lost" by engaging in a compass and a mapping activity. They also had fun playing a game of "Camouflage" in the woods during their physical education class.
In the afternoon, students learned about survival priorities. They built shelters out of "dead and down" materials and placed the shelters into areas that were ideal for survival. At the end of the day, guest speaker and horticulturist, Chuck, along with Matt and Emily, arrived to talk about the importance and history of the white pine and the history of Arbor Day. Students were able to take home a white pine seedling in which to plant on/around Arbor Day. Click here to read more about the life of a tree. You may notice a few new faces in our photos this week. That's because our class has the pleasure of dividing into thirds and joining in with each of the other fourth grade classes for most of the activities. A huge "Thank you" goes out to our Naturalists for the week: Miss Jennifer (with Mrs. Miller's class), Miss Melody (with Mrs. Otey's class, and Miss Victoria (with Mrs. Revell's/Mrs. Swears' class), as well as all of the very helpful, friendly, welcoming staff at the Chippewa Nature Center. The fourth graders have a special week coming up very soon! The week of April 18 – April 22nd all fourth grade classes from Pine River will be spending the week at Chippewa Nature Center (CNC) thanks to a grant the CNC received from the 3M Corporation. Each day we will cover academic material as usual, but it will be in the context of nature! Attached is a copy of the CNC Nature Week information that will come home with your child today. Please contact me if you have any questions. The children and I are looking forward to a great week of learning in nature! We will be taking a trip to Bay City State Park on Thursday, April 14th to learn about the habitat and life cycle of the eagle. Due to funding from an outside source, this trip is strictly limited to our classroom students and chaperones. We will be leaving for the State Park at 9:00 AM and returning to Pine River Elementary around 1:00 PM. Please have your child dress appropriately for the weather that day. We will be walking near the bay in mucky terrain, come rain or shine! Dressing in layers is recommended. Your child will need a sack lunch for this trip. Please complete and return the lunch form that was sent home with your child. Please email me if you would like to chaperone. There is a limit of four chaperones—first come, first served. |
