Students observed the structures (parts) of a flower and learned how each part performs a function (job) to help a plant reproduce. They looked for the sepals, petals, anthers, stigma, pistil, and ovary. The sepals protect the flower as it develops, the petals attract pollinators, and the anthers make pollen. They learned that pollen, often transferred by a pollinator, sticks to the stigma then moves through the pistil to the ovary where seeds develop.
Ms. Jolene paid us a visit last Friday to review some skills. She reviewed how students can problem-solve social issues by first trying to identify the "Size of the Problem" and then acting accordingly.
She reviewed the following about the word, empathy:
She also reviewed that it's important to use an assertive response when you stand up for yourself. She reviewed that:
She read The Invisible Boy in order to teach the students to notice others around you, especially those who appear to be left out of activities. She facilitated a discussion where students brainstormed ways to notice and include others.
Miss Jen and Miss Karen from the Grace A. Dow Memorial Library paid us a visit today. Miss Jen read us the exciting book, Ronan the Librarian. (The video is posted below.) The librarians reminded us of the traditional free- and low-cost resources that the library has to offer such as books, audio books, videos, computers, and digital resources.
They generated A LOT of excitement when they told us about the many new and surprising additions that are now available. Did you know that adults can check out board games, yard games, binge boxes, craft kits, discovery kits, and puzzles? Did you know that adults can also check out a telescope, a hammock, and even a metal detector! After that, the librarians showed the children how to search for items on the library's website: https://www.gadml.org/ Check it out! Finally, the librarians told the children about an October reading challenge. For more information, please see the "Slice of Reading" flyer that will come home with your child today. We've had a couple of picture-perfect picnic kind of days lately. Thanks to a generous grant from Trinseo, we are in the process of receiving a beautiful outdoor space in our courtyard. Trinseo, in partnership with Three Rivers Construction, leveled/prepared the ground, made the forms, and poured the concrete. Many Trinseo and Three Rivers Construction employees generously donated numerous hours to move top soil, rake, plant seed, remove equipment, and beautify the space. There's even more in store, so stay tuned!
We enjoyed a fast-paced interactive presentation by Mrs. Simon & Mrs. Meyers from Consumers Energy. We learned about sources of energy, kinetic & potential energy, renewable and nonrenewable resources, how natural gas can be converted into electricity, electrical circuits, conductors and insulators, safety tips, and ways to be more energy efficient. A highlight was making a class-sized circuit!
Please look for the Take Action kit and Home Energy Worksheet that will come home with your child today. Please consider completing the survey. Even partially completed surveys will be accepted. Students will receive a color-changing pencil upon returning the survey to me. Thank you for your help. Find student & family resources here: https://thinkenergy.org/mi/ |
