Subjects
Math
We will learn many concepts this year: add and subtract numbers through millions, multiply with multiple digits, divide multi-digit numbers, solve story problems involving addition, subtraction, multiplication & division, add and subtract fractions with like denominators, multiply fractions by whole numbers, understand how fractions can be written as decimals & compare them, measure lines & angles; convert measurements from larger to smaller units, and analyze & classify geometric figures based on properties (parallel sides, perpendicular sides, particular angle measures, and symmetry). The goal of the instruction is two-fold: skill efficiency (rapid recall of math procedures) and conceptual understanding (relationships among facts, procedures, and ideas).
Math Lab
This daily program provides math instruction and enrichment for all students to strengthen their understanding of mathematical concepts and improve computational skills. Lessons are presented by the classroom teacher and the math intervention specialist, Mrs.Snell. If you have any questions about math lab, please email Mrs. Crystal Snell at [email protected]
Reading
Students will have opportunities to read and respond to self-selected books and to teacher-selected texts. In addition to reading workshop, students will be engaging in reading and responding across all subject areas.
Science
Here's some info about each unit: life (plants & animals, internal & external structures, and information processing through the senses), physical (energy transfer & conversion, speed, collision, natural sources of energy, waves and information transfer), earth (rocks, fossils, weathering, erosion, Earth’s features & environmental changes), and engineering design (investigate possible solutions to problems & improve designs).
Social Studies:
Students will continue to learn about Michigan as well as begin to learn about the United States. Topics will include: Michigan and US history & geography, the US government, economics, and citizenship.
Spelling:
Spelling tests will take place each week. See https://www.spellingcity.com/users/Mrs_D_Johnson for lists, handwriting sheets, games, etc.
Writing/English:
Students will have opportunities to self-select their own topics as well as respond to teacher-selected topics. We'll write the following pieces: realistic fiction stories, persuasive letters, nonfiction pieces based on personal expertise, literary essays, research writing, and poetry. Also, they will engage in writing across all subject areas. English instruction (grammar, sentence structure, punctuation, etc.) will take place as well.
