Our survival-themed week continued with the help of Mr. Justin. Today, we...
- Played first-aid charades
- Learned about some common problems that could occur in a survival situation
- Brainstormed ways to apply basic first-aid treatment while waiting for medical help to arrive: dehydration (give water), heat stroke (remove extra layers of clothing; cool down), hypothermia (put on dry clothes; warm up slowly), anaphylactic shock (use EpiPen), broken bone (make a splint), & larger injury (make a stretcher)
- Discussed the three elements needed for fire: heat, fuel, and oxygen
- Attempted to start a fire using an old Native American fire-by-friction technique
- Gathered fire-building materials into pie tins
- Attempted to light the materials using one match per person
We are looking forward to our last day tomorrow. The naturalists encouraged the children to wear good footwear for a long hike on Friday. They were encouraged to wear shoes (not rubber boots), socks, sunscreen & hats. They were also reminded to bring water bottles.
Miss Katie taught us that you can wrap a baggie around a clump of needles on a pine branch as a way to trap the water vapor that is released from the pine needles. (The process of plants releasing water vapor through their leaves is called transpiration.) It worked! Thank you for the update, Miss Katie!
