- Sketched birds while in the Wildlife Viewing Area for art class
- Learned about four types of clouds (cirrus, stratus, cumulus, & cumulonimbus) and how recognizing those types can help predict the weather
- Talked about how predicting the weather could help a person stay safe in a survival situation
- Learned that erosion happens when rocks and soil are moved to another place by ice, rain, wind, gravity, animals, or people
- Took a hike to see signs of erosion in various areas of the CNC
- Talked about how to avoid areas of erosion for safety reasons
- Spent time improving the shelters that we started on Monday
- Attempted to start a fire using an old Native American fire-by-friction technique
- Built fires in pie tins using dry materials and one match per person
- Talked about how to apply basic first aid treatment while waiting for medical help for some problems that could occur in a survival situation: dehydration (give water), heat stroke (remove extra layers of clothing; cool down), hypothermia (put on dry clothes; warm up slowly), anaphylactic shock (use EpiPen), and a diabetic emergency (eat something)
Our survival-themed week continued today. We were fortunate to have another beautiful day in the great Michigan outdoors. Today, we... This week's lessons have been built around a survival theme. Today, we...
The students and I would like to give an extra-special thank you to our CNC Naturalists for the week: Miss Victoria (with our class), Miss Jennifer (with Mrs. Miller's class), and Miss Cherie (with Mrs. Otey's class), as well as all of the very helpful, friendly, welcoming staff at the Chippewa Nature Center. No paper menu will be sent home for June. Students should bring a sack lunch every day during CNC week. Here's the lunch menu for the last week of school:

Also, thank you to all of the helpers who made the food, served us, and cleaned up afterward. It was a fun way to wind down the school year. Thank you!
On Thursday, students performed fractured fairy tale plays in front of their classmates. The performances included: The Three Little Elephants, Little Late Riding Hood, The Cheetah and the Sloth, Spiderella, and Goldilocks and the Three Bullfrogs. They are looking forward to their encore presentation when they perform in front of the kindergarteners on Friday.
The students chose a play and were given a script with approximately one week to practice. They were to work together to decide how they would present it. Some chose to memorize their lines, some used props, and some wore costumes. Everyone had a great time! (And, it was a fun way to sneak in some public speaking practice, too!) |
